I am wondering, at this moment, if I have a constitutionally protected right to dress like a pirate at work every September 29th? After all, it’s part of my religion, and freedom of religious expression is a constitutionally protected right. Therefore, given that it is part of my religion to talk, and dress, like a pirate on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, should I not be allowed to dress and talk like a pirate at work?
In fact you can dress and talk like a pirate on International Talk Like a Pirate Day and no one can stop you.
The greyfaces may look at you with a confused/worried/disapproving look, they may ask you to go home and change, or they may tell you to clean out your desk. These are called consequences and accepting them is the root of responsibility and the corner stone of freedom.
You can do anything you like and there are consequences for everything you do. Some of these are positive; getting paid for working, getting thanked for being helpful, getting something you want for working to get it. Some of them are negative; getting slapped forharassing women, getting hurt for being stupid, getting arrested for breaking laws.
The important questions in anything decision are “What are the consequences of my actions” and “Am I willing to accept them”.
I sound like a conceited asshole when I talk like that. Or at least I think I do. I hope that others do not think I am a concieted asshole and I hope that I am not a conceited asshole. Here endith the dumb assery.
